Angry Birds, Sharks and Parenting

It was a hot and sunny summer day today.
It was a hot and sunny summer day with four kids who need to go back to school stat.
Tempers were flaring and the best way I know how to extinguish them is with water.
Water and food. It works almost every time. Almost.

I had a Living Social certificate for half off pizza at a local establishment called Upper Crust Pizza. And I’m so glad I tried it. Possibly the best pizza in my hometown.

We took that pizza with us to the beach for an impromptu evening picnic. A good idea in theory….

Little did I know how much seagulls like pizza. Maybe they’re from Italian ancestry?
Give me your pizza and no one gets hurt. New England seagulls do not mess around.
After shooing the aggressive birds away, we finished our delicious meal. Time to swim! But why do the girls look so forlorn while sitting on a sandbar?
Because mom told them they could only go knee deep. You see, there have been great white shark sightings in Chatham.
And while Chatham is a bit of a drive from here, I imagine that it’s entirely possible for a shark to visit our beaches if it felt so inclined.
The sharks are swimming around Cape Cod because the seals are plentiful. And sharks like to eat seals. My area also has seals which makes me a bit nervous.

And after everything that has happened over the past year, I guess I’m erring on the side of extreme caution. So, for now it’s knee deep ocean swimming for the girls.

Even if it makes them grumpy.

For those of you who are parents, isn’t it hard to justify your parenting to your kids? I mean, in this instance it has more to do with my irrational fears of losing my kids after watching my eldest spared from a seriously terrible fate, but even with the smaller stuff it’s hard.

What they see as discipline is just my trying to protect them. I just wish I could convince them of that.

  1. They do look very cranky sitting there in the water! That’s hilarious. One of those pictures that you’ll look at in 10 years and crack up laughing.

  2. God, I hope so Suzanne. Right now they’re driving me bonkers, lol.

  3. they will hopefully understand one day. i hope so at least or there is no hope at all for my kids lol.
you have to do what feels right though even if it is irrational or you would never forgive yourself if you went against your gut feeling and something did go wrong.

great pics and omg that pizza looks GOOD

  4. Missy- That pizza was stupid good. Just like something from NYC. Too bad the original price is so steep. It will be special occasion pizza in the future. You’re right. They’ll understand in the future. But for today they are going to make me regret it. :)

  5. Lovely pictures! I have to drag my boys kicking and screaming to the beach, but if there were sharks, they’d go in a heartbeat ;) Perhaps a mini vaca to Chatham is in order.

They will understand someday maybe when they have kids of their own. We were just down that way last week and I was that same mom. My 7 year old has finally learned that swimming in the ocean can be fun and all she could hear was me yelling “too far” over and over again. Gotta love those funny pictures too they will give you some really good laughs when they get older.

You are absolutely right Melanie! Your fears are your fears and they won’t understand until they have kids of their own. Great pix! How did you get that sea gull to pose for you!?? LoL.

  8. My kids are older, 17 yr old daughter and 21 year old son. You never stop worrying about them. I get a lot of eye rolls and I know they think I’m dumb. They of course know everything. Just goes with the territory. But who do they come to when they need help with their bank accounts…or need new clothes…or help with college…or to make a dr. appointment??? Mom.
I don’t think kids get it until they have their own children and become parents.
On a diff note, your pizza and gull story brought back a funny memory. We were on the boardwalk in Wildwood NJ when a seagull swooped out of nowhere and lifted my son’s pizza from the plate in his hand. He cried and cried. He must’ve been like 8 yrs old. His sister who was 4 at the time, has never let him ever forget it :)

  9. Welcome to the “Mean Mom Club”. They’ll get it…eventually…far off into the future…I hope.

  10. HHmmmm may time to watch the movie “JAWS” ;-) I saw it when I was your oldest girl age, I would not even go into the local lake ;D

  11. I was down the cape with my cousin last year and one night I decided to eat dinner on the beach. I had just sat down, unwrapped my sandwich and was about to take a bite when a gull flew into the back of my head, knocked the sandwich out of my hand and had a good meal. Cheeky things!

  12. I don’t have any children, but your photos remind me of my youth. I grew up in Hyannis. I remember spending my days at the beach and swimming (and sometimes sitting) in the water. Good times. :)
