Guess The Angry Animal

Today was a pretty uneventful day. Sort of sleepy, really. So, when the girls spotted a mama turkey and her babies strolling through the back yard, things perked up around here.

Truth be told, they would’ve been much happier if it was a bear. There have been bear sightings in these parts over the last couple of months and the kids have been really hoping that one will take a hike through our yard.

I’m quite ok with that not happening. Turkeys are aggressive, but I’ll take my chances with a turkey over a bear any day of the week. Thank you very much.

Aidan and I did our 5 mile hike on the canal today during sunset, which is quite lovely. Aidan prefers to jog his 5 miles, while I prefer to putz along taking my own sweet time.

I’m not fast, but I get ‘er done. Slow and steady wins the race and all that jazz.

While plodding along I saw something in my peripheral vision. Something black and fuzzy was bouncing up and down on the rocks by the water’s edge.

And I never figured out what it was exactly, because as I crouched down to get a better view…..

(No, he’s not smiling)

The cute and fuzzy thing bared his cute and pointy teeth while letting out a low and primal growl. I’m all about self preservation, so I scooted the hell out of there.

This world is a dangerous place, I tell you.

My guess is that it’s a mink. Aidan thinks it’s an otter. So I’ll leave it up to you my brilliant readers to figure it out.

What’s your guess?

*Update*

In a bizarre twist of fate, mom is for once in her life correct about something and apparently mink have anger issues.

I think it may be a fisher cat. I live near you and they are been sighted in our area so maybe they moved down a bit. They are mean nasty and horrible and they horrify my poor puppy.

yes, it’s a mink, I think you will like them a little more when you find out their favorite food is rat. They are well fed.

  5. Dinner and new clothes without stepping foot in a store… now *that* is thrifty!

  6. I’m an animal lover…but sometimes the ones in the wild can scare the pants off me, even the smallest ones. You should have seen/heard my response to the evil/deranged possum who was on my porch one night :p I know they’re truly just as scared of us as we are of them, and many times their behavior is learned from past experienced with humans. But, they are still scary when they purposely show you their teeth :/

  7. yeah i was gonna say it looks like a fisher. supposed to be cute but… lol

  8. Peppermint PhD,
If a deranged or sane possum is on your porch or feels threatened by you, it will attack you in a perceived need to defend itself. Stay away from them. Let the possum rip up the porch.

If the possum is on the porch, it is probably looking for food left for a dog or cat or looking for water.

LoL! I love this post and the comments above Melanie! I think it is a mink also, the profile matches the drawing you posted and the snarling face matches the personality in the link you provided. Maybe it’s from decades of being trapped and skinned for their fur!! Quite the adventure for a Friday evening sunset walk with your son. Glad to hear he is walking (okay, jogging) with you again. He hasn’t done that since the accident a year ago has he?

  10. Yup! That’s a mink! We saw one during a kayak trip in Charelston last year. Cutest face!
