Penzeys Spices

Last week I went to make one of my all time favorite breads, but discovered I was out of three key ingredients. Oregano, poppy seeds, and dried minced garlic.

Now, if you look above at my highly organized *cough cough* spice cabinet, you are probably not too surprised that this snuck up on me. I think you could hide a small child in there and I wouldn’t see it.

I have a spice addiction.

And in this house it’s unacceptable to run out of oregano and dried minced garlic. They are recipe staples and not having them on hand means I can’t make many of my family’s favorite dishes.

It was time to stock up so that I have everything I need for colder weather cooking and baking.

We have a few discount stores close by that have economy sized jugs of these spices, but what I’ve found is that they don’t have a tremendous amount of flavor.

And if I’m going to go through all of that effort to make something from scratch, I don’t want to use spices that aren’t flavorful.

Instead of the discounters, I went online to check out Penzeys Spices. I heard that their prices are very reasonable, their product high quality, and that they include free stuff in your order. Free stuff makes me happy.

Sure enough, I found that their prices were very comparable to the discount stores. The selection was vast and seductive. (yes, spices are seductive to foodies) And they offer free shipping for orders of $30 or more. That’s really not hard to do after perusing their 250+ offerings.

When my order came, I tore open my box like a kid on Christmas morning. And I was so very pleased. I opened the various jars and bags and indeed the stuff smelled fresh and more potent than the discounter’s spices.

As an added bonus, they sent a full sized jar of Raspberry Enlightenment which looks like it will be delicious as a glaze for a pork loin or chops.

They also tossed in a “sample” of Sandwich Sprinkle that I’ll certainly use to make my homemade croutons as the bottle suggests.

When Penzey’s calls something a sample, what they really mean is dang near full sized product. They are a very generous company.

Now to be clear, Penzeys doesn’t know I exist. I paid full price for my order. I just wanted to share this resource for those of you who enjoy cooking as much as I do.

Have you ordered from Penzeys before? Have any favorite products?

I LOVE Penzeys! They have such an amazing selection and their prices are excellent. I have lots of favorites but if I had to pick one thing I couldn’t live without it would be the chicken taco blend it is so good! Their other taco mixes are really good too. If you ever find yourself near Arlington MA I highly suggest stopping in the store it is really fun to smell all of the different things they have to offer.

  2. I love their chili powders and enjoy experimenting with the different flavors. Oh, and cinnamons, they have a great selection. Their catalog has some nice recipes too. I want to try their vanilla next.

  3. I am so glad you posted this! I’ve been looking for a new spice discounter online. I’m going to head over and see what their prices are like for Cardamon-love that spice but it is so expensive in the stores and I have been jonesing to make my Cardamon Bread. Thanks for the heads up on Penzey’s!

  4. The Penzeys store in Arlington is about 10 miles from where I work. So yup, been there! Bought Dave a bunch of spices for Christmas last year LOL!

  5. Big Penzeys fans over here. Luckily my brother lives right near their home in Milwaukee. So I just send him over to pick stuff up for me. Or I stock up when we road trip out that direction. So fresh and such great quality for the price you pay!

  6. Huge Penzey’s fan here! They are such a great company and their spices are really top quality. I love the “samples” they include, too and if you ever have a problem with your order (on their end or yours) they are super friendly to deal with over the phone. My spice cupboard and a shelf in my pantry is full of all kinds of goodies including tons of Penzey’s products. I especially love their Mural of Flavor.

  7. Melanie, you must experience one of their stores – samples, recipe cards and so much more! I often make a pilgrimage to the Norwalk, CT store when visiting family in CT. My go-to spice is the Sunny Spain seasoning (saltless lemon pepper). I use it on fish, chicken, veggies and anything else I can think of. They have great gift items as well.

  8. I use their Shallot-Pepper seasoning on everything from eggs to salmon. If you don’t think it’s ridiculous to have three kinds of paprika, add Penzey’s Half-Sharp to your regular and smoked paprika. I like their seasoned salt, bay leaves, whole nutmeg, and black and red pepper blend.

Thank you for the heads up on Penzey’s Melanie. I will have to check it out and see what I want in my spice cupboard. Amazing choices.

  10. I’ve been ordering things here and there from them, depending on the freebies on the catalog that month. I got some of their mixed seasonings, which have been great for grilling veggies with. I also just got a large shipment of stuff(refreshing for the holiday baking) and in one of the box sets i got there was real nutmegs, cinnamon stick and bay leaves– all of which were bagged up and stored. And i’ve always gotten a free sample of something with each order. Great surprise.

Oh, love the Sandwich Sprinkle! It can turn a drab piece of cheese toast into a fantastic yummy treat. We also use it to sprinkle on fries when they’re hot out of the oven. All of Penzey’s taco seasonings are great too. The only problem I have with them is that it is too hard to narrow down my choices!

  12. I will admit that I am spoiled with multiple stores to shop at in the Milwaukee area, but I do love Penzey’s! I agree that the Shallot Pepper is great. I regularly make a simple chicken in the crockpot where I douse the boneless chicken breasts in Arizona Dreaming before pouring the salsa over… 6 hours later on low and supper is done with veggies and rice. I love the dried garlic and onions, the Black and Red, Florida (so good on salmon!), and California Pepper blends, and even their Chip Dip mix. My Mom adds Baking Spice to everything – even box cakes! Their sets make great gifts- even guys like getting the grilling spices. Now that you’ve ordered, you will get their catalogs – full of recipes around the spices. Often the catalogs have a coupon for a “free” jar – current coupon is for Raspberry Enlightenment and my catalog shows free shipping with $30 purchase through 10/15.

  13. Oh, I love Penzey’s! I live very close to a store in the bay area (california) and i just love going there! their cinnamon is fantastic, and their bold taco seasoning is a hit with the adults in our house (too spicy for the little ones). I love their onion powder and their minced onions as well! So worth the extra to get spices from Penzey’s!

  14. Oh, how I love Penzey’s! First time I visited their store in Overland Park, Kansas, I knew I had found a winner. They have large glass jars on each display, so you can see and smell the spices, which is my favorite part. Imagine getting to figure out your favorite cinnamon. It’s like being a kid in a candy store.

  15. I have been shopping Penzey’s for years now. Never knew there was a store in Arlington, MA. Will have to make a trip there sometime.
I love cardamom, and thanks to Penzey’s, I can afford to buy more than just a little jar in the supermarket which would probably cost me over $10.
Everything is always fresh and more than you expect from them.

  16. I love Penzeys. The nearest store is an hour away so I usually order on line. They are great to work with.

I placed an order last month — they had a special on the Teacher gift box, half price!! While I was at it, I ordered several other 4-pk gift boxes — I’m on my way for christmas shopping!! Penzey’s is great – and I love the recipes in the catalog, too!

  18. Gram marsala, Green goddess spice and chilli powder are my fave…also love the bay leaves…
We have a store in CT and at grand central terminal in NYC… My spice cabinet is amazing….

Love Penzey’s. Fortunate to have one in Beverly Hills, MI.
Getting to be stew/roast season. Their beef base is excellent.

  20. I’ve never heard of them before! Going to check them out now! I love spices. A Spice cabinet is one of my favorite scents.

  21. OOH! Good to know, thanks! I agree on the discount store spices. You get what you pay for in that regard!

  22. Cheryl l. says:

Been there several times! My cabinet has several of their jars. And you’re right! The prices are VERY reasonable.

  23. I’ve been using Penzeys for years, they’re the best! I love the free coupons and recipes from their magazine. Sunny Paris is one of my favorites!

  24. I’m so glad you posted this! I have been curious to try Penzeys ever since I read about them in Rachael Ray’s magazine some years ago. I recently discovered that we have an actual brick and mortar store here in Central Florida. I’ll definitely be stopping in there! Quality spices at a good price is a huge deal for me. :)

  25. I use Penzey’s Chicago Steak Seasoning on beef, pork, chicken, mushrooms, eggs, vegetables…it’s a great all-purpose seasoning. Very nice smokey flavor.

  26. check the WEBSITE, they have retail locations all over the place!
and NOTHING beats a GREAT fresh cinnamon!

  27. Meran niCuill says:

Have been shopping at the Penseys stores for at least 12 yrs! Did you know the spices are cheaper if you get them in bags? I haven’t found herbs and spices cheaper, even “on sale”, nor the freshness or variety, as what I find in the stores. They have my favorite cinnamon there too (who knew there were different cinnamons??)

    I’ll never shop anywhere else.
