The Tupperware Cabinet

tupperwareDo you have a task that you know you have to do but you put it off and put if off until it drives you so crazy that you just have to deal with it?

Yeah, that’s my Tupperware cabinet. I hate it.

You see, even before I had kids it was a pain in the butt. The lids. The bottoms. Never being able to find the right top to the right bottom. It’s a pain.

And then the kids came along which of course means more Tupperware. To be fair, most of the stuff isn’t even Tupperware. There’s some Ziploc, Glad and even a few Fit-n-Fresh containers, but Tupperware gets the blame because it started this whole mess. Damn those house parties.

The kids have chores. One of those chores is to empty the dishwasher. I’m pretty sure they open the Tupperware cabinet door just enough to shove in whatever piece needs to be put away and then they slam the door shut before it all comes tumbling out.

That’s my theory anyway. So, I blame this sad state of affairs on the kids because they don’t read my blog and can’t present their side of the story. I win.

tupperware2As you know, I’m not a morning person. Starting my day with a shower of Tupperware raining down on me when I reach in for a single container to put some grapes in for my kid’s lunch is not the way I want to start my day.

So, I finally tackled the cabinet…

Goodbye Pampered Chef Chill Tray. I never use you and you take up way too much space. And why pray tell do I have four cake takers? I can’t even remember taking a cake anywhere in the past decade. My mother-in-law must be wondering where all of her Tupperware went. Looking at this stack of orange and avocado bowls before me, I think I know what happened to them.

And why do I have three times as many lids as I have bowls? Is there an equivalent monster that eats bowls like the dryer sock eating monster? It’s a mystery.

I now have a hefty donation for Goodwill. Which seems only right after all of the Pyrex I’ve been buying from the thrifts. There’s got to be someone out there that collects Tupperware.

How does your Tupperware cabinet look? Do you struggle with keeping it neat?

  1. i have a drawer with lids and another with the containers but i still have them jumbled everywhere. i could most likely fit it all in one spot if i organized it lol. yours looks great btw

  2. I cabinet looks like the first picture……….and yeah………. I’m kind of like your kiddos. I open the door just enough to get something in there and then slam it closed before everything falls on me. LOL I need to organize it, but every time I do, it stays like that for like 3 days and then back to crap/

  3. You have room for more Pyrex now!! I remember Tupperware parties going back decades, er, I mean years (suggesting I’m not that old!). The Tupperware cabinet always gets disorganized after a week and I too can lose a finger doing the crack open the door, toss in and slam maneuver. Your after pic looks fabulous! Off to Goodwill to make your donation and who knows… find more Pyrex!!??

  4. Our Tupperware cabinet is the identical twin of your “Before” picture … and usually remains that way until one of us gets frustrated enough by the latest Tupperware avalanche to finally throw it all on the floor and start from scratch.

OK, so maybe *I’m* the only one who throws it all on the floor before reorganizing it.

    Anger issues? Me? Noooooo.

  5. OMG!!! I have a cabinet and an “area” for this stuff. I reorganized my kitchen this September but still didn’t touch those areas as I cannot seem to face it. I did however buy my kids (all teenagers) nice tupperware to take to school and have made a special area for this. So far that is staying nice. It’s the stuff used for leftovers that is everywhere. After reading this I may need to tackle it after Christmas. Thanks for the laugh this morning, I really needed it.

  6. I can’t believe you snuck into my house and took a picture of my cabinet! Sooo… you coming over to organize mine for me?:)

  7. I have a shelf for round containers and a shelf for square containers. Additionally, I have round lid drawer and a square lid drawer. It is not perfectly organized but simplifies the search for the right lid:-)

  8. My tupperware cabinet is twice the size of yours and it is a disaster! Its on my to-do list during Christmas vacation!

  9. Thank you for that picture of the Tupperware cabinet. I hate feeling like I am the only one with a mess on my hands.

  10. All I can say is that photo is a twin to my cabinet too. I also have a monster that eats either the lids or the bowls – it is not picky! And when I get too frustrated, I do throw them on the floor to sort out. I have a deep lower cabinet – tried bins to sort tops and bottoms without success. Tried nesting “space saver” sets….they too get separated. My husband has threatened to ban me to only purchase the square Glad that has the pop together lids – I guess they do come in 2 sizes… I keep telling him that I’ve got to “use up” the others that we have – maybe Goodwill is the answer!

Yeah, my cupboard is like that. I used to sell Tupperware, so you can imagine how much I had. A couple of years ago I brought a boatload of it to Salvation Army. I still have the mess, though. It’s hard to get my husband to part with this stuff. He puts all leftovers in it, doesn’t label it, and shoves it into the freezer. I can’t tell you how many times a month we have mystery meals from the freezer. He even saves all the tubs that Smart Balance and olives come in. And he’s the one who just throws them into the cupboard and slams the door. I shouldn’t complain; he at least helps with the clean up and dishes.
Oh, and I have an overabundance of bowls without lids. I can never find the lids to go with my bowls. I’ve started giving homemade gifts in plastic bowls just to get them out of the house, and people keep giving them back. If they would only be so good about giving my canning jars and rings back.

  12. I have an avalanche of Tupperware every time I open the doors. Plus, it is face level and over my head where it comes from. I feel for you. Most of mine is Tupperware.

  13. Just a quick note about the real tupperware containers- they have a life time guarantee. My husband’s grandmother had a very old container that the lid no longer fit correctly. I went to their website and called their #. They asked me for a description of the item and any #s on it. They couldn’t find it in their system ( it had to be 30 yrs old) but they found a current item we thought was equivalent . $4 shipping and a week later I had a brand new ($40) container on my doorstep. They told me to keep the old container. Just something to keep in mind.

  14. Actually, I think I am one of the few people I know that doesn’t have a problem keeping my Tupperware in order. (As long as the husband doesn’t put dishes away, that is!) Although it’s probably because I am anal about the wierdes things. However, my mother in law’s Tupperware cabinet looks like this and it drives me crazy!!! We eat at their house quite often and naturally help clean up. I pretty much refuse to try to find Tupperware for leftovers. Not happening! I know I could have it straightened out in an hour, but I hate to insult her by offering. Avoiding the cabinet altogether is a much simpler solution! :)

  15. Hi Melanie – I’m a newbie to your blog but love it, I’ve written a similar ode on my new blog, but I have to admit, I have not yet tackled it yet because no matter how many times I start over, I still find myself back to square one a few months later. I was thinking about trying those tupperware that keep their lids on, but then was worrying that they’d be a pain in the dishwasher. The real culprit is my busy life and time though, I am afraid. Cheers!
