I stopped by the store today to pick up a single bag of spinach and a gallon of milk. They say to write a list so that you stick to it but when you only need two items, a list isn’t necessary, right?
Thirty minutes after arriving at the store I was at the checkout with a cart full of impulse purchases. At least they were mostly healthy. Sort of.
I’ve been trying to get more protein into my diet. So when I spied some new Oikos flavors, I had to try them. Banana Creme and Cafe Latte? Yup, those are my kind of flavors. Into the cart they went.
And some yogurt for the kids too. They prefer the sweeter and creamier Yoplait which is fine by me. It has a little more sugar in it than I would like, but at least they’re getting extra calcium into their diet.
Now normally I prefer either homemade pancakes or King Arthur Pancake Mix, but Aunt Jemima was a steal after you figure in the gas points. And I like to have some kid friendly syrup in the house.
Pure maple syrup is dang expensive and I don’t want the kids pouring it over Eggo waffles. Seems like a waste if you ask me. So, the good stuff on the weekends and Aunt Jemima for the Eggos on the weekdays.
Another gas points deal. This time for my favorite cereal. Quaker Oatmeal Squares. The kids don’t like it. So I don’t have to worry about them hoovering it down before I get the chance to have a bowl.
School’s starting back up soon. Time to stock up on lunchbox fixin’s. A reader asked recently if I still stockpiled. And the answer to that is a resounding yes. School lunch items are a major stockpile commodity in this house.
Also for the stockpile, pickles. I really like the Mt. Olive pickles. They are on sale at Stop&Shop this week for $2 and they had $1/1 coupons attached to the necks of the jars. $1 pickles is a fairly decent price.
Oh, and the bag of spinach. Luckily I remembered that. You know, it doesn’t really matter what I’m shopping for. I always get sidetracked by something. At least today I wasn’t seduced by chocolate or Twinkies. I get 100 gold stars for self restraint.
Lately I’ve been making some small changes in my diet. More protein. More calcium. And a lot more leafy greens. Since I’ve started running, I’ve been craving foods that I usually wouldn’t. I’m not sure if that’s psychological or some type of natural reaction to exercise.
I don’t know and I don’t care. I’m just going with it.
How about you? Are you stocking up on back to school lunchbox items for the kids? Can you believe that the summer is almost over? I swear I’m in denial.
