There have been few times in my life when a clothing catalog has inspired me to rush out to the store to purchase an article of clothing. Actually, I can’t think of a single time that I’ve done that. Sure, I’ve circled items I’d like to have when they finally go on sale, but I don’t recall a time when I rushed out to purchase something at full price. Usually I stalk items I like until they go on sale.
And then I got the new White House Black Market catalog in the mail yesterday. I had just poured myself a cafe mocha and cozied up on the couch for a five minute work break and figured I’d spend it looking at emaciated women modeling clothing that I could only dream of fitting into.
But as I turned the pages of this new collection, I found myself dog earring page after page of outfits that seemingly were made for me. And when I turned to the page you see above. The hot dress that promised to slim and shape, I already had my keys in hand and kids in tow.
I had to see if this new line was as perfectly tailored for me as it appeared to be.
A few things to know about me…
While I like short skirts and dresses that showcase me legs, I don’t like low cut anything. I’m pretty conservative that way.
I’m also not a blazer/jacket girl as I have a pretty broad upper body which never seems to work well with extra layers up top.
Also, I’ve always avoided the color green and anything related to it including teal. Someone once told me that pinks and corals were my colors and I sort of stuck with that for four decades.
So, when I got to White House Black Market and started trying on the new fall lineup and the sales associate suggested a low cut teal top with coordinating jacket, I told her she was nuts.
Oh just try it on, she said. It will look amazing on you. Just trust me on this one.
Something else to know about me, I trust NO ONE.
Imagine my surprise when the outfit not only fit beautifully, but the color worked for me too. I guess I was wrong about the color and jackets. Two things I’ve been avoiding my entire life.
I guess this goes to show you that it pays to listen to the sales associates. Sometimes they are right. Now, I still feel a little uncomfortable with the twins hanging out. And they will probably fall off when exposed to sunlight after not seeing it for two decades, but for that brief moment they will look awesome before they evaporate into the cosmos from sun shock.
And did you see the shoes? Sweet Caroline are they hot. And comfortable too! Who would’ve thought that 5″ heels could be comfortable. But they were.
After trying on the sales associate’s choice of outfit, I tried on the dress that snagged my interest in the first place and the dress you see above.
Now, I’m not going to show you the black and white dress that I fell in love with quite yet. I’m saving that for an upcoming event. But the dress above is another winner from the fall line for those of us who want to look cute and a little modest. It’s flattering without being too sexy and perfect for business or going out for a night on the town. And it also matches my new shoes.
Oh yeah, I bought that dang outfit she suggested. Shoes, jacket and low cut top in the foreign to me color teal.
The whole shebang. I had a very very hard time forking over the cash.
Here’s how I justified it…
First of all, I’m working and damn am I working hard.
Second, I’ve been running (like running for exercise) for weeks and I’m dropping clothing sizes. Actually, I’m almost in a size 6 pant. That’s crazy talk for me.
Third, there have been precious few times in my life when I look in the mirror and say; Damn woman, you look good in that outfit. I felt that way today and that is worth whatever it costs.
Finally, Why the hell not? I’m worth it.
And then I swiped my card and walked out of the store, bags in hand. Zero regrets and the hottest shoes I’ve ever seen in my bag.
