BlogHer 12 Wrap Up

BlogHer 12 took me by surprise. It really did. BlogHer 2010 was a difficult conference for me. I had only been blogging for seven months, and only knew a handful of people.

BlogHer is the mother of all blogging conferences. It is huge and can swallow you alive if you let it. You have to go in knowing what you want from it. A game plan if you will. In 2010 I didn’t have a plan and I struggled finding my place in a sea of strong personalities.

This time around it was different. I’m now more seasoned and I know a lot more people. I also had a lot on my dance card this year. I was a volunteer for BlogHer and I was also working with a brand that was a sponsor of the conference.

Both responsibilities kept me busy. So busy in fact that I had little time to worry about how I fit into the grand scheme of things. And for someone like me that frets a lot, that was a good thing.

People reported different take aways from BlogHer this year. But then again, every year people have different views on how their conference experience went. Some people felt empowered, some inspired, a few disappointed, but that’s sort of how it goes with life. Everyone views things differently.

For me, this conference made me feel accepted. The picture you see up top is Cooper Munroe of The Motherhood. Sometimes you see me mention that organization, as I do work with them. Meeting people in real life that you normally work with virtually is quite amazing. Meeting people you work with and admire greatly is even better.

And it wasn’t just the warm hug from Cooper that made me feel all fuzzy. It was spending time with my peers who are also my friends..
Ellen was my partner in crime for most of the conference. I met her at a previous conference and we really clicked. We have so much in common that it’s kind of scary. She’s snarky, fearless, and kick butt on a Harley. Oh, smart too. She actually reads the fine print on packaging.
What can I say about Christy? Co-founder of the Boston Parent Bloggers, and a dear friend, Christy has taught me so much about blogging that I think I owe her credit for the growth of my blog. She’s been an incredible mentor.

Kim. Everyone needs a Kim in their life. A constant source of zen, bright sunshine, words of empowerment, and happiness. Kim is like vitamin D in human form.

Rene. I didn’t get to spend as much time with Rene as I would’ve liked, but the short bursts of Rene here and there did the trick. She is a whirlwind of energy and just a little bit of her attention goes a long way. Sort of like a shot of tequila.

I could go on and on gushing over people that I got to connect with who add so much friendship to my life. Debbie, Katie, Frelle, Charlene, Jodi, Amy, and the list goes on and on.

Fellow bloggers who are just as lovely in real life as they are on their blogs.

And if it wasn’t for conferences like BlogHer, I’d rarely get to connect with many of them otherwise.

Sure there are great sessions and learning opportunities, but really I go for the personal connections. That’s what matters most to me.

It’s also great to connect with brands….

McDonald’s had their Listening Tour breakfast where they listened to people’s concerns about nutrition and their thoughts on how McDonald’s could better give back to the community.

I learned so much about McDonald’s investing in community play spaces, and of course their dedication to Ronald McDonald House charities.

It was an interesting exchange of thoughts and ideas that had us all fully engaged and thinking. Not to mention refreshing that a brand cares enough to get consumer input.

I very much enjoyed talking with the folks from Samsung. They were there showcasing some of their new products, and even though I’m not going to be able to afford any of their latest and greatest tech toys anytime soon, it was very fun to try out their products. Up above a rep was trying to teach me how to use the new television that responds to your hand movements. Wild.

The fine ladies up above are from Change The Cycle. They read my post about Poise and gave me a new fuzzy pink stuffed uterus. A gift that keeps on giving for sure.

So many great interactions and opportunities to connect with people that work together in the blogging community. Be it the bloggers themselves, the blogger networks, to the brands that would like to work with us. An amazing mix of people and companies that made the whole conference experience so very enjoyable.

If you are a blogger, I highly encourage you to attend a conference down the road. It opens up so many doors not only to possible earnings, but also doors that lead to friendship. And that’s my take away from BlogHer 12.

BlogHer 12 and a Giveaway!

BlogHer 12. I survived it. It was a whirlwind trip, and I’m so happy to be home. Exhausted, but happy. Before I catch some desperately needed zzz’s, I thought I’d share a few pictures with you.

Tomorrow I’ll write a more in depth post and respond to comments on the previous one, but for today I’ll just share a glimpse of some sights and a few products that caught my eye in NYC.

The view from my room at the Hilton was nice, and the room was pretty comfy. That said, the Hilton has crappy internet service in the rooms, which made it really hard to blog. This was an issue in 2010 too, so you’d think they’d get it together.

I didn’t get much time to walk around and enjoy the sights, but I did get a chance to take in this bit of magnificence. A natural wonder for sure.

The conference itself was great, but we’ll discuss that tomorrow. For tonight, I’m going to share with you some products I saw on the expo floor that I thought were pretty nifty.

Lifeproof makes cases for your electronics that protects them from liquid. Something that I appreciate after losing a phone in both the pool and the toilet. Considering how much it costs to insure iPhones, this seems like a good investment.

If you have a pint sized car lover in your family, you might want to check out the new HotWheels Wall Tracks. With tracks that secure to the wall with 3M Command Strips, your little one will have a blast watching the cars zip around their room. And you won’t have to worry about holes in your walls. Pretty darn cool.

I’m not sure why I didn’t take a picture of Rickland Orchard’s Greek Yogurt Bars, because they were incredible. Maybe it’s because I ate it before I could snap a picture of it. It comes in a variety of flavors, but my favorite was the blueberry. It just might be the very best granola bar I’ve ever eaten.

But the award for the booth with the biggest crowd went to Eden Fantasys. They ran out of product well before the conference was over. Maybe that’s why all of the women seemed to be in a good mood this conference. I sure hope they come back every year.

As promised, I gathered together some swag for a giveaway. It’s a huge assortment of products, and there’s even more than what I have pictured, but this is just a taste of what will be in the winner’s box. You get what you see in the shot above, and everything pictured from here on down…

$15 in PetSmart gift cards, $5 Build A Bear gift card, a blingie camera strap for your point and shoot camera, an assortment of free product coupons, and lots more.

And a little blast from the past. It’s a size small, but I’m sure you will find some cool use for it. See? I haven’t forgotten my roots.

You didn’t think I’d chicken out, did you? I was one of the first in line. The things I do for you. So self-sacrificing.

But wait, there’s more! Trojan was also buzzing around the expo floor. Here is their new Triphoria, and I even got you batteries. You’re welcome.

How would you like to win this fine assortment of prizes? I mean c’mon, this is even better than those prizes you get in Contestant’s Row on The Price Is Right! Who needs a motorized scooter when you can win all of this?

To enter, comment on this post by leaving your first name, last initial, the state you are from, and that’s it. I toyed around with having you guys share which product you’re most excited to win, but I think that would be too much to ask. But oh so much fun to read.

Entries must be received by Sunday, August 12th 11:59 pm ET. Good luck!

Poise Cooling Towelettes, How Not To Use Them

Dear Mom and Dad, please skip this post. Dear gentle reader, if you are easily offended, you too should skip this post. Matter of fact, you all might want to skip this one. I’m about to go all TMI on you.

Still with me? Clear all liquids away from your computer, iPhone and tablet. If nothing else, don’t drink liquids while reading this post. You’ll thank me later.

Here at BlogHer, brands come to promote their new products. The newest and greatest products which they hope us bloggers will write about. Usually I wait until I get home to give the stuff a whirl. Sure, I might snarf down a granola bar, or cup of yogurt on the expo floor, but the rest I pack away until I get home.

That said, tonight I was getting ready to go to an event hosted by Harley Davidson motorcycles. I had spent most of the day working at the conference and needed to freshen up a bit. Because let’s be real, who wants to straddle a Harley without feeling fresh? Right, no one.

So, I grabbed a package of Poise Cooling Towelettes which I was given today. That was mistake number one.

Now, as you can imagine, I’m a little OCD. A normal person would either use one wipe or take a fruit loopin’ shower. Me? I use three wipes. I was meeting a girlfriend in the lobby and I was running late. I grabbed three wipes and swipe, swipe, swipe, the job was done. Mistake number two.

And at first it was awesome. It was a little tingly like what I imagine KY Intense might feel like. Refreshing and a little zingy. Fun.

Two minutes later my hoo-hoo felt like I had a good case of rug burn.

Three minutes later I felt like it was lit on fire with kerosene, nail polish remover, and a blow torch.

Five minutes later I was grabbing whatever paperwork I could find to fan my flames. I could not fan fast enough and the room air conditioner was of no help. Mistake number three, but I’m not about to explain why. You’re welcome.

Already late, there was nothing else that could be done. Off to the Harley event I went. Burning, in tears and wishing I could toss myself into the Hudson river.

Ironically, the expression on my face in this picture was not dissimilar to the expression on my face after cleaning up with the wipes.

After about an hour and a half, the burning sensation went away. Thank God. I was able to ride the Harley and life was good. No harm, no foul.
It wasn’t until I got back to the hotel and shared my story with my friend over at The Bearded Iris that I found out what the problem was.

The Poise Cooling Towelettes are made for swabbing your neck and other areas of your body that are afflicted by hot flashes. In teeny tiny print on the back of the package it clearly states not for use in the intimate areas. It doesn’t get much more intimate than your hoo-hoo folks.

What’s the takeaway? Never assume. It makes an ass out of you and me, and can plum burn yours off if you wipe it with Poise Cooling Towelettes.

BlogHer 12 Day One

Here I am. It’s been awhile, hasn’t it? I’m safely at BlogHer, but I’ve had major connectivity issues in my room. Matter of fact, the entire internet is down and has been for twenty-four hours now. And with 5,000 bloggers on site, that has created major issues for all of us.

Right now I’m actually sitting on the floor of the expo hall. The only spot where I can find any connectivity. I just wanted to pop on and tell you that I’m having connection issues, but I’ll be back on later this evening blogging from Starbucks.

Thank God for Starbucks.

So, please bear with me while I get to a spot where I can really write and share. Because I have a lot that I’d like to share with you. And a killer giveaway too. Odds are good that it will rock your world. Or at least shake it up a bit.

BlogHer ’12

My bedroom looks like Macy’s exploded in it. Dresses hanging on the door, shoes strewn everywhere, jewelry dumped out all over my dresser, panties and bras in a jumbled heap…

It’s a disaster.

I’ve tried on every top, bottom, and dress I own. I’ve put on some outfits multiple times. I’ve turned in circles evaluating my butt, boobs, and waist ad nauseum. I’m sick of my own reflection.

And the reason I’m a clothing psychopath right now is because I’m packing for BlogHer. The biggest conference in the country for people who do what I do. 4,5oo women will be there. That makes me break out in hives just thinking about it.

I’m going to share something with you that I haven’t before in the 3 1/2 years that I’ve been blogging. I don’t particularly like hanging out with women. You are the exception of course because I love you.

But the rest I could pretty much do without.

I know that sounds really bad. But it’s the truth. Sure, I have close women friends, but I’m highly selective of who I hang out with, who I bond with, and who I invest in. Because friends are an investment for sure.

And it’s not because I’m a snob. It’s because women scare me.

More specifically, women bloggers scare me. The drama, the competitiveness, the “do you know who I ams”. It’s a lot.

So, the idea of spending three days with 4,500 of them sort of scares the crap out of me. That’s a lot of estrogen in one hotel.

Luckily for me, I know a lot of people in this business. I also have a lot of people excited to see me since this time last year I couldn’t attend BlogHer because I was fighting for my life and all.

That gives me comfort.

I also know that if I get overwhelmed, I can come back here to my blog, my safe place and share what’s happening with all of you. Because you guys are always here for me. Thank you for that.

I know I seem so strong, but trust me. I don’t always feel like that on the inside. I’m a mighty fine actress.

In some ways I’m really excited. There are all kinds of parties and opportunities to meet some amazing people. Martha Stewart and Katie Couric will be speaking. There will be cocktails and dancing. And of course there will be free stuff. There is always free stuff at blogging conferences.

Interestingly, Eden fantasies is sponsoring an event and will be giving away 5,000 vibrators. So, if you feel the ground shake in a few days, it’s not an earthquake. It’s the Hilton in New York. And thank God they are battery operated because I think the power grid would shut down.

Duracell is missing out on an excellent promotional opportunity. They should be working hand in hand with Eden Fantasies. Pun totally intended.

Besides vibrators, there will be a ton of other products given away with the hope that we will write about them. So, be sure to check in later this week for an awesome giveaway.

Maybe if you’re lucky I’ll score you a vibrator too.

That’s what friends do.

But you’ll have to buy your own batteries. Those things are expensive.

Back to packing, butt examining, and fixing the straps on the push up bras. It’s a mom blogger conference after all. Do you know how many of those women are lactating? I’ve got to do something to make mine competitive.

And talking about making things look better than they are, I’m going to leave you today with this hysterical Spanx post. I dang near wee-weed when I read it.

My Life As A Blogger

When I first started blogging I didn’t realize I was actually doing something. What I mean is that I didn’t recognize blogging as a verb. I was quite oblivious to the whole blogosphere until the day someone called me a blogger. I had to Google it to figure out whether or not I had been insulted. That’s when I learned that there were a ton of people just like me out in cyberspace, typing away on their laptops and sharing their lives. It was a major a-ha moment and my life literally changed  at that point.

When I started blogging, my only focus was on blogging about shopping. It was what I was known for not just locally, but nationally through the forums and communities I was involved in online. I had developed a name for myself and was quite content to be known as “Melanie The Coupon Goddess”. As I grew as a blogger, that began to change….

I’ll never forget my first blogging conference. I chose BlogHer, the mother of all blogging conferences, as my introduction to all things blogging. Looking back I realize that wasn’t my brightest choice because of the sheer size of it. It would be intimidating to any blogger, even a seasoned one, if they hadn’t been to a blogging conference before. That said, ignorance is bliss, so off I went full of anticipation at the thought of making new blogging buddies. Silly, naive girl.

People will tell you that the blogosphere is full of women who want to help each other grow, that bloggers are generous by nature and willing to share and that cliques are just misperceptions of new bloggers. Well, that wasn’t my experience at BlogHer. Granted, I went in with some seriously unrealistic expectations on what I’d get out of it, but in my brain I likened it to a huge slumber party where we’d become each other’s BFFs for life and sing 80′s songs at some local NYC karaoke joint. See? Naive.

What I walked into was an army of business minded women who had to have been the most competitive bunch I’ve ever laid eyes on, all toting Canon Rebels, Macs, and other technology paraphernalia I couldn’t identify let alone use. And none of this would have been a big deal to me if I had connected in a meaningful way with even one of the other bloggers in attendance. Unfortunately every person I bumped into happened to be cool and indifferent. This in not to say that all bloggers are snobby, I just had poor luck connecting with the right people at that conference.

I just wasn’t mentally prepared for the intensity of it all. Keep in mind, I’m not a shy girl. Most people would call me type A, a leader, vivacious, what have you. Well, this vivacious type A girl was so freaked out that first day of BlogHer that she went back to her hotel room and cried her disillusioned self to sleep. My poor roommate probably thought I was a nutcase. She was probably right.

The next day things did turn around for me. I realized that my focus needed to be on connecting with brands and connect I did. I ended up making connections with brands and pr companies that are still paying off for me today, not only with blogging opportunities, but also real friendships. So a very good time investment even if it gave my ego a few bumps and bruises along the way.

And as time moved on, I’ve made real friendships within the blogging community. Women who DO like to share and help each other grow. Women who encourage each other to work hard for what they want and to pursue their passions and dreams. Indeed I’m completely blessed to be associated with some mighty fine women I wouldn’t have met if it weren’t for blogging.

Where am I today? I’m now a real bona fide blogger. A blogger who has grown to the point where I’m ready to share more of myself with my readers. My heart will always lie with The Coupon Goddess, but it’s time to spread my wings a bit and see if I can fly within other blogging topics. Shopping will always be a passion of mine and I adore my readers, but I’m excited to explore other areas that interest me and hope that others will learn from my experiences. A new chapter in the book titled Melanie.
